Is It Permissible to Support a Team Named “Devils”?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it permissible to support a sports team or attend a college with a name like “Devils” if I avoid engaging in related cheers or slogans?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It is permissible to support to a certain extent; however, it can lead to neglecting many of our obligatory acts over time, even if we try to stay within limits. Nevertheless, we must never forget that life is short and should be spent on activities that enhance our spiritual, physical, and emotional well-being. Our focus should consistently be on these three aspects.

Regret of People of Paradise

Mu’adh ibn Jabal (Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said,

“The people of Paradise will have no regrets, except for moments that passed by them in which they did not remember Allah.” [Tabarani, al-Mu‘jam al-Kabir]

May Allah (Most High) grant us success in utilizing our time for actions that please Him and are beloved by Him.
