25:74

“And those who say: Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and offspring a joy for our eyes, and make us of the foremost of the mindful (muttaqin).”
[Qur’an, 25.74]

Comments:

“A joy for our eyes” refers to the ultimate joy in this life and the next to find oneself, one’s spouse, children, and family upright & obedient to Allah Most High, for it is only in submission, turning, and remembrance of Allah that true contentment and joy is found, in this life and the next.

“Foremost of the mindful (muttaqin)” refers to being the most virtuous, honored, and beloved of Allah’s servants–those of the greatest mindfulness (taqwa).

The true believer doesn’t just try to be a “good Muslim.” Rather, they strive for excellence in their religion and standing with their Lord as they strive for excellence in their worldly life.

The greatest qualities one can seek are to become one realized in faith (iman) and true mindfulness (taqwa).

Mindfulness (taqwa) is to shield oneself from harm. Religiously, mindfulness (taqwa) has three levels:

[1] shielding oneself from eternal punishment, by avoiding disbelief and embracing faith;
[2] shielding oneself from Allah’s displeasure and punishment, by avoiding sin and embracing submission & obedience; and
[3] shielding oneself from disadvantage in one’s standing with Allah, by avoiding distraction and heedless, and striving to turning to Allah completely–such that one submits, worships, and lives as though one beholds Allah Most High. This is true joy.

And Allah alone gives success.
