As-salamu alaikum wa rahmutallah,
May this reach you in the best state of health and iman. Ameen.
Alhamdulillah, SeekersGuidance was present at the Muslims United for Change Malaria Fundraiser that was held in Maryland on Saturday September 5th, 2009. The purpose of the event was to get Muslim leaders and scholars under a single banner to spread awareness of the devastating effects of Malaria and to raise funds to eliminate it.
The speaker line up included Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Imam Zaid Shakir, Imam Siraj Wahhaj, Shaykh Muhammad Ninowy, Shaykh Yaser Qadhi, Imam Mohamed Magid, Imam Syed Naqvi, Dr. Altaf Husain, Dr. Fatimah Jackson, Saleemah Abdul-Ghaffur, Br. Ahmad El-Bandary, Br. Anwar Khan and SeekersGuidance’s very own Shaykh Faraz Rabbani. There was also a performance by Nader Khan and Ghuydar Bashmaf. (Check out the post-event reactions from the speakers: here)
SeekersGuidance was represented by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani and also had a vendor booth. Shaykh Faraz’s presentation was on his vision for Islam in America. He spoke about the importance of having a commitment to ihsan (excellence) in our activism. A commitment to excellence entails seeking out the best practices within any given matter and learning from the experts in that field while also seeking what the Qur’an and Sunnah have to say regarding it. In engaging in activism, the goal should be to seeking the greatest, widest, and most lasting benefit to our community and society at large and to do so in a manner that is pleasing to Allah (subhana wa ta’ala). Shaykh Faraz also emphasized the importance of establishing institutions of learning and inculculating a spirit of service in our activism.
The SeekersGuidance booth showcased the Fall 2009 Course Catalog (speaking of which, today is the last day for early registration for Fall 2009 which qualifies you for a 15% discount!) as well as a sampling of some slides and lecture from the “Islamic Manners” course with Shaykh Faraz. Attendees were also able to sign up for a free class on The Prophetic Character.
Alhamdulillah, the event was a success and the organizers raised around $200,000 to that end.
May Allah (subhana wa ta’ala) shower His mercy and blessings upon our community and assist in such endeavors in the future. Ameen.
