Saying “In Sha Allah”

Question: Is it obligatory to say “In Sha Allah” whenever talking about future plans?

Allah Most High tells us in Surat al Kahf not to express a resolution concerning the future without adding the words ‘God willing”, or “InshaAllah”. He Most High says, ‘And never say of anything, “I will definitely do this tomorrow,” without adding, “if Allah so wills!” But if you forget, then remember your Lord, and say, “I trust my Lord will guide me to what is more right than this” (Qur’an, 18: 23).

This command has been understood by the ulema to mean that it is recommended, but not obligatory (Sharh Muslim, Nawawi).

It is not sinful to say that you will do something without adding “InshaAllah” at the end of it.

It is worth noting however that “InshaAllah” is actually in the dictionary. Please see: https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/inshallah

In a work scenario, when speaking to religious Christians, you can always add “God willing.” Otherwise, it would be ok to not mention it given the formal nature of the communication, and you can always just say it to yourself out of respect and deference to Allah.
