Does Spraying Water on Filth Produce Filthy Splashes?
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
My query is concerning is about some amount of Urine on the Floor and tap water falling on it. Are the splashes resulting from this filthy?
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
As long as traces of filth (smell, color, taste) won’t appear in the splashes of water, those splashes will be deemed pure. [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
You don’t have to taste those splashes to check! Being confident that those splashes are free from these traces is enough to deem them pure. [Ibid]
The reason for the ruling is that the tap water you are pouring on the filth is pure and running. It will not become filthy when mixed with filth, except if traces of the filth are manifested in the running water. [Shurunbulali, Nur al-Idah]
Splashes are, of course, the running tap water after it has been mixed with the filth. Since splashes are still in movement, the tap water is still considered to be running water.
It is only a small body of still water that becomes filthy by merely mixing with filth, even if no trace of filth is manifested in the small body of water. [Ibid]
If, on the other hand, there is blood on the floor, for example, and the splashes are red, then those splashes will be deemed filthy because the color of the filth is manifested in them.
And Allah knows best.
Wassalam
