How Can I Undo My Father’s Du‘a against Me?

Question

I angered and bothered my father by watching too much on my phone and not studying for my license. He said, “May God destroy you”. I don’t want this dua to be answered, and I don’t know what to do. Should I ask Allah for forgiveness and ask my father’s forgiveness? Or should I ask my father to take his du‘a back? I don’t know what to do.

Answer

Thank you for your question. I empathize with your fear, and I pray that you be the coolness of your father’s eyes and be pleasing to him until his death.

Filial Piety

I don’t know if Allah will accept this du‘a, but you should strive to be the best that you can be from now on. Earn your father’s good du‘as for you. If you please him and he dies being pleased with you, surely that will count in your favor, by the grace of Allah. I urge you to follow the advice of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) in the treatment of parents.

The Prophet also (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Let him be humbled into dust; let him be humbled into dust. It was said: ‘Allah’s Messenger, who is he?’ He said: He who sees either of his parents during their old age or he sees both of them, but he does not enter Paradise.’” [Muslim] The meaning is that he doesn’t enter Paradise because of his lack of filial piety (birr al-walidayn). [Ikmal al-Mu`allim bi fawa’id al-Muslim, 8/14]

Repent

Repent for any misdeed that you committed toward your father, and treat him well when you can. Pray with him, buy him gifts, bond with him, and try to do what he asks you to do. If you don’t feel like it, try to communicate with him and compromise. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Have taqwa (fear) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up an evil deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards the people.“ [Tirmidhi]
