How Can I End My Whispers?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
It has been three months that when I pray, I get a whisper from Shaitan, which is very bad about Allah or anything else. Sometimes when I pray, It doesn’t come. Sometimes I get whispers when I am sitting. I am very confused. I am not asking; this is a sin. I am asking Him to end this problem, and I am home for three months because of vacation, so I am free. My friends say you are free, so this is why. Please guide me to a solution to end this. Jazakallah!
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
These whispers are due to your clear faith in having a good connection with Allah Most High and maybe a lack of activity. I would like you to start reciting the duas and supplications below and keep yourself occupied, whether it’s work, starting new studies, or keeping yourself busy in varied like reading, worship, exercising, helping with family chores, etc.
Thoughts
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once a group of people came to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) and asked: “We experience such evil thoughts that it is impossible to bring them on our lips.” The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Do you really experience these thoughts? Yes, they replied. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “They are clear signs of faith.” [Muslim]
Abu Huraira (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Verily Allah forgives my Ummah for the evil thoughts that occur in their hearts until they don’t say it verbally or act upon it.” [Bukhari; Muslim]
The shaitan is pleased when he makes religion seem unbearably difficult for somebody. Seek refuge in Allah Most High from him.
Religion is Ease
Moreover, realize that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, ‘Verily this religion is ease, and none make this religion difficult except that it overwhelms them.’ [Bukhari]
Read Ta‘awwudh and This Specific Dua for Misgivings
Say the ta‘awwudh, which is:
“أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيطَانِ الرَّجِيم”
(I seek refuge in Allah from the rejected devil)
Make dua abundantly when anxious before prayer. You can also recite Surat al-Nas, a Sura and dua, for protection against misgivings. Also, keep your tongue moist with this dua:
“.اَللّٰھُمَّ اجْعَلْ وَسَاوِسَ قَلْبِیْ خَشْیَتَکَ وَ ذِکْرَکَ وَاجْعَلْ ھِمَّتِیْ وَھَوَایٰ فِیْمَـا تُـحِبُّ وَ تَرْضٰی”
(O Allah! Render the thoughts and inclinations within my heart to be Your fear and remembrance, and let my endeavor and desire be devoted to what You love and are pleased with) [Daylami, Musnad al-Firdaws]
Rejoice and Be Grateful
Rejoice and be ever grateful in the bounties of Allah Most High and His innumerable blessings upon you, from faith, good actions, health, family, and safety. There is so much to be grateful for. Of the greatest of blessings is that He has made you a believer.
Keep in contact with local scholars and Imams. I pray to Allah to increase you in sound faith, good actions, and an ever-increasing relationship with Allah Most High, Amin.
