Will Allah Accept the Duas of My Mother Who Is Praying against My Suitor?
Question
I want to marry a brother who is not of the same culture as me, and my mother is praying to Allah for this not to work because of that. Is she allowed to pray for that? He is practising & of good character. I have also known his sister for a while and I know that they belong to a good family. Will my mother’s dua be accepted as Allah accepts the duas made by a mother?
We have not been in a haram relationship. My father has been very supportive hence I even proceeded with this proposal. I’ve already been a victim of physical & mental abuse in this process but have silently endured & feel that things will be worse if I stay at home.

Abuse
First of all, you should not be accepting any kind of abuse at home. You have a right to safety. Can you find a way to talk to someone about this? Perhaps a therapist or counsellor? Try taking these steps to cope with your parents until you can move out:

Supplication
If your mother is praying for this marriage not to happen, that dua might be answered, but not necessarily. If Allah wants it to happen, no one can stop it. And if Allah doesn’t want it, no one can make it happen. Submit to His will, pray istikhara, pray for what is best for your religion and this-worldly affairs, and trust in Allah’s decree.
Abdullah bin Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) related, “One day I was behind the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) [riding on the same mount] and he said, ‘O young man, I shall teach you some words [of advice]: Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allah [alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allah [alone]. And know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.’” [Tirmidhi]
