Is It a Conditional Divorce to Say “Shout at Me First” in Response to My Wife’s Demand for Divorce?

Question

Does saying “Shout at me first” in response to my wife’s demand for divorce constitute a conditional divorce if I do not remember whether she shouted or not?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

The above scenario will not constitute a conditional divorce as you mention you do not remember whether she shouted or not. Also, if she did, you still have to utter a statement of divorce after the shout.

Divorce Is a Serious Issue

Divorce is serious. Our religion has important rules about discussing it casually, especially in conditional terms.

People should stay calm when talking to their spouses and avoid using the word “divorce” lightly. Hasty decisions can lead to problems, while thoughtful consideration is a virtue from Allah, as the Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) taught us.

Given the considerations in such cases, please consult reliable local scholars about the specifics of the situation.
