Can Two Marriage Ceremonies Take Place?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Can a man marry the same woman twice without getting a divorce? Like in European countries, people get married and then marry again when they fly back home.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
There is no need for another marriage ceremony (nikah). However, this can occur and be assumed as a renewal marriage (Tajdid Nikah). Sometimes, European marriages are based on civil and country law, and back-home marriages are an Islamic marriage ceremony (nikah).
It is a cautionary measure for a simpleton to renew his faith (iman) daily and marriage with his wife every month, once or twice, with two witnesses.
