Can a Sunni Man Marry a Woman Who Left Ismailism?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I have a marriage proposal from a woman who was raised in Ismaili; however, she has since disassociated with Ismailism but still believes that there is a God. As a Sunni man, is it permissible for me to marry her?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
If she has distanced herself from it, that’s a positive sign. Now, you should focus on helping her understand her belief in God and His attributes. Facilitate her learning of the fundamentals of faith and worship, and make sure she is willing to embrace them to prevent any conflicts in the future. If she agrees to follow these principles, you may consider marrying her.
General Guidelines
A general guideline is that a potential spouse should follow one of the four schools of law (madhabs) and one of the two schools of belief, either ‘Ashari or Maturidi. If both partners meet these guidelines, then marriage is generally acceptable.
If the person you want to marry does not follow these traditional schools, things become more complicated. Consider how your different views on religion may affect your relationship. Similar religious orientations are important for a happy marriage and raising children together. If your differences are significant, they may lead to conflict and resentment, making it hard for both of you to grow in your faith. In such cases, marrying may not be wise, even if you generally get along well.
