Is it Permissible to Work in a Candy Shop That Sells Both Halal and Non-Halal Items?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I’ve been offered a job at a candy shop selling halal-compliant products (vegan and non-gelatin) and non-halal items (containing gelatin or animal-derived ingredients). Considering the limited job opportunities for minors in my country, is it permissible for me to work there, and would my salary be halal? If this job is considered disliked (makruh), I will donate part of my salary as zakat.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It would be permitted to work in a candy shop that sells both halal and haram. One’s earnings will be lawful (halal). This is the position of Imam Abu Hanifa (Allah have mercy on him). See the detailed previous answers below.
The salesperson at the shop’s till is not an agent who concludes the sale but a handler of goods and a data processor. The sale is concluded between the customer and the shop owner. One should, however, dislike such in one’s heart: loving that which Allah loves and hating that which Allah hates is from true faith. See the detailed links below.
This ruling refers to doing so in a non-Muslim country or non-Muslim areas in a Muslim country.
