Does Showing Disdain towards Islam Take One Out of the Fold of Islam?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I’ve read somewhere that showing disdain towards Islam counts as mockery and takes one out of the fold of Imaan.

Sometimes my mum plays tilawat of the Quran in the other room, and this can be heard from my room, so I avoid watching movies/listening to music at this time (I understand these are haram actions, so I don’t do it as I don’t want to disrespect the Tilawat of the Quran). However, I feel it is inconvenient for her to do this.

I feel inconvenienced when she does this as I can’t watch/listen to music during this time, and I ask her to turn it down sometimes and then proceed to watch/listen to music.

  • Is this feeling of inconvenience counted as hatred/disdain/mockery of Islam?
  • I’ve been feeling this constant stress that I am committing actions that take me out of the fold of Iman, such as mocking Islam.

I know that actions are according to intentions, but I’ve read online about mocking Islam; even if we do it without the intention to mock, we still lose our Imaan.

I feel like I am going crazy with all this worry.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

Yes, showing disdain and disrespect to one of the fundamentals of the din, like prayer, is a form of sin and can lead to disbelief (kufr). However, in your case, you were profoundly ignorant about its implications and thought you were being respectful by telling your mother to turn the volume down.

As you have regret and it was all profound ignorance, Allah Most High will overlook. Just make sincere repentance, seek forgiveness from Allah Most High, and move on in your life to be obedient to Him and follow the sunna of the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace.

Allah only accepts the repentance of those who commit evil ignorantly (or recklessly) then repent soon after (before death comes)—Allah will pardon them. And Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. [Quran, 4:17]

Abu Dharr (Allah be pleased with him) reported the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever does good in what remains of his life, he will be forgiven for what has passed. Whoever does evil in what remains of his life will be seized for what has passed and what remains.” [Tabarani, Al-Mu’jam al-Awsat]
