Do the Misconceptions of Recent Converts Take Them Out of Islam?
Answered by Shaykh Faraz A. Khan
Question: I recently married a sister who is a recent Muslim convert. Occasionally she says things which concern me, such as having the belief that tasting alcohol was different from drinking alcohol. When I explained this was wrong, after an exchange she agreed. Did her view affect our marriage, since rejecting the prohibition of alcohol causes one to leave Islam? What should I do if similar issues arise in the future, as I don’t want to worry about my marriage being in danger due to such issues?
Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,
I pray this finds you in the best of health states.
Your nikah is not under threat. Her misconceptions by no means take her out of Islam. She is a recent convert and needs to learn her religion. This takes time, and it requires patience and support on your part.
Imam Tahawi states in his well-known creed, “A servant is not considered to have left his faith except by denying that which originally caused him to enter into it,” i.e., except by denying one’s very belief in the central tenets of Islamic faith, such as Allah and His attributes (His oneness, omnipotence, omniscience, etc.), His books, His angels, His prophets and messengers, the Last Day, or the Sacred Law (sharia).
And Allah knows best.
wassalam
