Allah’s obligation towards the creation

Question: Is Allah obliged to do anything for His creation?

Answer:

Wa alaykum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,

Dear questioner,

Thank you for your important question.

Part of our core beliefs, and part of our relationship with our creator, is the acknowledgment that we owe it to Allah to thank Him and worship Him and He is not obliged to do anything for us.

He is not obliged to create us, sustain us, guide us, forgive us, or grant us Paradise. All of these He does out of pure kindness, and we do not deserve anything from Him.

Sayyidna Ali (Allah ennoble his countenance) was asked, ‘What if He does not grant me guidance and makes me do evil? Has He done me good or wrong?

‘If He withholds from you that which is your right,’ Sayyidna Ali replied, ‘then He has done you wrong. But if He withholds from you that which He gives out of pure generosity, then that is His largesse which He may grant to whomever He wills.’ Then he recited, ‘He is not questioned why He does something, rather they will be asked.’ (Qur’an, 21: 23) (Tafsir al Qurtubi)
