Question

What is the Sunna method of placing the hands and fingers during the Tashahhud?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

When sitting in the prayer, whether it be the first or last sitting, it is Sunna to place your hands on your thighs till the tip of the fingers is at the ends of the knees.

Then when one reaches the statement “Ashhadu an la ilaha,” one should clench the pinky, ring, and middle fingers, place the thumb’s tip on the middle finger’s middle knuckle and raise the pointer finger.

When saying “ill Allah,” one should lower the pointer finger and leave the hands in that position until the end of the sitting. [Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
