What If You Have the Urge to Fart While in Congregational Prayer?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

What should I do if I go to Jumua’ and have to fart during prayer? I can’t just get up and do wudu while everyone is praying; that would be strange. So what should I do?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are well.

Discharge of Wind in Prayer

If you already had a discharge of wind, it would be absolutely fine for you to end the prayer and go for wudu, or if did not yet, then leave the prayer hall, relieve yourself outside, do wudu, and return for the prayer. If you feel embarrassed, wait for the Imam to go into prostration and then leave.

One of the disliked actions in prayer is to pray while having the urge to urinate or defecate or while needing to relieve oneself from gas. Therefore, if it distracts one, one must break the prayer and relieve oneself unless one fears the prayer time will expire.
