Wearing Stitched Clothing in Ihram: What Kind of Expiation is Due?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Sidi Salman Younas

Question: A family member of mine went for umrah. However whilst in ihram he took it off and put stitched clothing on. I know that that is wrong. What kind of kaffara does he need to offer?

Answer: assalamu `alaykum

I pray you are well.

If the stitched clothing was worn in a normal manner for a whole day or a whole night then one would be required to slaughter a sheep.

If the stitched clothing was worn in a normal manner for less than a whole day or less than a whole night then one would be required to give charity. The amount that needs to be given is the equivalent value of half a saa’ of wheat, namely 2 kg.

If the stitched clothing was not worn in a normal manner then no expiation is required. However, since it is something disliked it is best to seek Allah’s forgiveness for doing so. For example, wearing an outer garment that has full sleeves by simply placing it over ones shoulder without putting one’s arms through the sleeves. This would be considered wearing in a manner that is not considered normal.
