Should We Redo Wudu after Withholding Wind and Then Doubting Ourselves?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
When someone holds in their wind and then starts doubting if the wind passed, should we redo wudu or ignore misgivings?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health.
One should ignore the doubts after having the certainty of withholding the wind. Any doubt that enters after that is a misgiving.
Based on the important fiqh principle, “Certainty is not lifted by a doubt.” [Ibn Nujaym, al-Ashbah wa al Nadha’ir; Majallat al-Ahkam al-‘Adliyya]
This means that if one is certain about something, like in your case, withholding the discharge of wind. Mere doubting, possibilities, and even likelihoods do not change this.
