Prostration of Recital from a Recording
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam
Question: Does one have to perform sajdah for every time an ayah is heard, for e.g. on a mp3 player consisting of sajdah tilawah?
Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.
No, you do not have to prostrate after hearing a verse of prostration from a recording, as understood from the words and expressions of the jurists. [see: Is Prostration Necessary if One Hears the Recording of a Verse of Prostration?]
The condition of the prostration being necessary is a live recitation.
Reciting a Verse of Prostration
It is necessary (wajib) for the one upon whom the prayer is obligatory to prostrate after reciting a verse of prostration, on condition that they did so whilst awake.
The prayer is obligatory for the morally responsible Muslim; and it excludes women who are in a state of menstruation or post-natal bleeding.
Hearing a Verse of Prostration
It is also necessary to prostrate after hearing a verse of prostration from anybody, except:
[1] a non-discerning child,
[2] an insane person,
[3] a sleeping person,
[4] in the form of an echo, and
[5] from a parrot, or the like.
[Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah; `Ala’ al-Din `Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-`Ala’iyya]
And Allah alone gives success.
