Do I Have to Repeat My Prayers in Which I Did Something That Is Disliked?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi

Question

In the book “Ascent to Felicity” (Maraqi al-Falah), the author mentions that: “it is mandatory (wajib) to repeat a prayer in which one intentionally did an act that is prohibitively disliked (makruh tahriman).” [Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar, 1/307].

Would I be sinful not to repeat a prayer in which a prohibitively disliked action has been committed?

Answer

In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,

I pray this finds you in the best of states.

Yes, it would be sinful not to repeat a prayer in which a prohibitively disliked action has been committed within this prayer’s time.

The fatwa position of most of the later scholars is that if one performed a prayer with something prohibitively disliked (makruh tahriman), it is

(1) necessary (wajib) to repeat within the time; and

(2) not necessary to repeat after the time—but, instead, it is recommended to repeat.
