Is Whistling Permitted?

Question: Is it permissible to whistle? For example, whistling a tune while doing errands around the house. whistling

Answer: assalamu `alaykum

Whistling is permitted as it is merely a sound from the mouth. However, it would be better to avoid it when there is no need or benefit in doing so due to the difference of opinion between the scholars on the issue where some considered it disliked while others permitted.

The basis for those who permitted the act is the lack of evidence to deem it prohibited or disliked. Rather, the clearest thing that has come regarding whistling in particular is the statement of Allah, “their prayer at the House was nothing but whistling and clapping of hands” (8:25), which is specific to prayer itself and does not indicate the unconditional prohibition or dislikedness of whistling.
