Is Teaching in a Media Program Permissible if Some Courses Are Considered Impermissible?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
I am an assistant professor teaching media-related subjects like advertising and media evolution. Some courses in the degree program include papers I consider impermissible, such as audio technology, animation, and video editing, though I do not teach those.
Am I accountable for indirectly facilitating students’ access to such courses? Is my job halal?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
Your job is permissible. Your facilitation of these courses is not sinful, nor does it imply indirect assistance in sin.
At most, your facilitation of these courses is 3 degrees separated from any sinful act. Even then the act is one of differing opinions of permissibility amongst the Imams of Islam.
Hope this helps
