Is it Permissible to Wear a Watch with a Gold Dial, Hour Marker, and Hands Just like a Gold Bezel?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I’ve read the answer about wearing a watch with a gold bezel. Does the same ruling apply to watch dials, hour markers, or the hands of the watch? Do these count as essential to the watch and are therefore not allowed if made of gold or silver?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It will be permissible to wear a watch with dials, hands, and hour markers made of gold.

The reason is the same as a gold bezel. These components do not come into direct contact with the skin. When one wears a watch it is the case and strap that holds onto the skin directly. The above are inner components. (Nahlawi, Al-Durar al-Mubaha, Ibn ‘Abidin, Radd al Muhtar).
