I was eating some pretzels, and I noticed they contained malt extract, which is associated with alcohol production and may contain small amounts of alcohol. Is it permissible to consume in the Hanafi school?

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It is permissible to use malt extract as an ingredient in food, as you find in pretzels. However, it’s a different process when it is used to make alcohol.
