Is It Permissible to Be a Minority Shareholder in a Restaurant Selling Alcohol?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Can I be a 20% minority shareholder in a restaurant where over 90% of revenue comes from halal food and drinks and less than 10% from alcohol while only taking profits from the halal transactions? I will not handle alcohol-related transactions or draw a salary.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It will not be permissible for you to become a shareholder in a business where you will be allowing alcohol to be sold. You are directly assisting in sin, which is not permitted in Islam as you are a shareholder of the business. You are responsible for making the decisions.
