Does One Have to do Udhiya/Qurbani for One’s Young Children?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Faraz A. Khan
Question: In the Hanafi madhab is one required to fulfil just their own sacrifice for eid al adha, or are they also required to do so for their young children?
Answer: Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah,
I pray this finds you in the best of health and states.
In the Hanafi school, one does not have to perform udhiya/qurbani on behalf of one’s young children, regardless of their financial status. This is based on the relied-upon position.
However if one is able, it is nevertheless recommended to do so on behalf of one’s young child — if the child is indigent, then from the parent’s wealth. If the child is wealthy, then from the child’s wealth, although the parent can pay for it if he desires.
