Does Chatting With the Opposite Sex Necessitate a Ritual Bath (Ghusl)?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam

Question: I’ve been told that it requires ghusl if you’ve chatted (been writing messages on the phone to eachother) with the opposite sex? Is this true? Or does it depend on what one have been chatting about? What I mean is, if there hasn’t been any improper conversations, does it still require ghusl?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam,

I pray that you are well, insha’Allah.

No. Talking, by messaging and the like, to a member of the opposite sex would not necessitate a ritual bath (ghusl).

Ghusl is only necessary after:

(1) Ejaculation

(2) Intercourse

(3) Menstruation

(4) Post-natal bleeding
