What Is the Correct Wording of the Qunut Supplication?

Question: Assalam alaykum

I find different books and websites showing me a different text of the Qunut supplication, even though they all seem to be citing the same sources. Often even the harakaat on the same words are different in different sources. As you can imagine, this can be incredibly confusing. Can you please provide clarity?

Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

There are different traditions (hadiths) which cite the qunut supplication. Accordingly, words and phrases can sometimes differ depending on what you are relying upon. Transmission of the qunut differs even in some of the books of the Hanafi School.

The upshot is that as long as you follow what is clearly related from the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), and the jurists have clarified what this is, your action will be a fulfilment of the sunna. Otherwise, any supplication fulfils the requirement of the qunut supplication.
