Can a Ritual Bath Performed at the Wrong Time Be Invalid?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Ustadh Sufyan Qufi
Question
If I delay Ghusl to the point where I miss the prayer in that period due to Ghusl, is that Ghusl invalid, and do I have to repeat it to make sure I complete the prayer in the period next time?
Answer
In the name of Allah, Most Compassionate, Most Merciful,
I pray this finds you in the best of states.
No, your ritual bath will always be valid irrespective of the time you perform it, as long as you fulfill all of its obligatory actions, namely washing your body thoroughly, including your nostrils and mouth. [Quduri, Mukhtasar]
Allah, Most High, says: “O believers! When you rise up for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of major impurity, then take a full bath.” [Quran, 5:6]
From this verse, Hanafi scholars understood that nothing beyond the required washing is needed to be allowed to pray as nothing else is mentioned beyond this washing in the rest of the Quran and the Sunna that is established strongly enough to amend this verse. Adding other considerations for the validity of the ritual bath would thus amount to abrogating the word of Allah, Most High, without justification. [Marghinani, Hidaya]
And Allah knows best.
Wassalam
