Can a Girl Ask for a Simple Nikah Ceremony as Her Marriage Payment?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Can a girl ask for a simple nikah as her mahr? Here, simple nikah means nikah in the masjid with only parents and a few well-wishers of both families present.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah Most High reward you immensely for your simplicity.

In the Hanafi school, marriage payment can only be given from wealth (mal).

The minimum marriage payment is 10 dirhams or anything equivalent to 10 dirhams in value. There is no maximum level for the mahr. One can find the current currency value from your local scholars and Islamic websites. [Mawsili, Al-Ikhtiyar li Talil al-Mukhtar; Ibn ’Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

No doubt, a simple wedding is a way forward, and in it lies blessings as given to such marriages ‘Uqbah ibn ‘Amir (Allah bless him and give him peace) reported, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “The best marriage is one that that has the least expenses.” In another narration, the Prophet said, “The best dowry is easiest.” [Ibn Hibban]

May Allah Most High give us all success in marrying our children as our Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) advised us to do, taking him dua at the time, Amin

I pray this helps with your question.
