Breeding Guard Dogs for Profit
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Ustadh Salman Younas
Question: I have bought a breed of dog that will grow up to be a guard dog. I intend to breed her and make money from her puppies. Will the money be Halal?
Answer: assalamu `alaykum
Yes, the money earned from selling these dogs would be permissible.
The texts of the Hanafi school are explicit in the validity and permissibility of selling dogs as they have a shari`ah-countenanced benefit, such as guarding and hunting. Even if the dogs have not been trained as guard dogs or hunting dogs at the time of the sale, it would still be valid. [Ibn `Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]
However, it may be slightly disliked if deemed an indirect assistance of sin, such as selling to someone one knows will not use it for a shari`ah countenanced reason. Otherwise, there would be no dislikedness.
