Being A Vegetarian
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Sidi Waseem Hussain
Question: Is it permissible to be a vegetarian or vegan?
Answer: Assalamu Alaykum Warahmatullah,
As for being vegetarian or vegan then the permissibility of it returns to ones intention.
If it is done with a good intention then there is no harm in it. So if one stops eating meat because the animals are not treated well before being slaughtered or the like then that will be fine.
But if it one intends things like, ‘we should not eat animals’ or ‘we should not kill the creation’ then it will not be permissible.
The Prophet of Allah (May Allahs peace and blessings be upon Him) ate meat and hence we cannot think eating meat is in itself wrong.
