Are My Past Actions Valid Since I Follow a Different Madhhab Now?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I got the answer regarding madhhabs before, but I still found a problem. I used to follow specific rules for purifying things, but to my understanding, these rules do not apply to madhhabs like the Shafi’i madhhab.

For example, letting an object tainted with impurity be purified after wind, light, etc., causes all the traces to go away to purify it. Now, if I want to follow a madhhab, will things I intended to purify in the past in this manner be deemed impure? I don’t want to deal with a lot of issues.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

You will not have to repeat or worry about any future act or opinion you follow in another school, despite the ruling being contrary in the previous school. What you have done in the past was a followable position and opinion based on the Quran and sunna and the school of fiqh you followed.

Rest assured; the past is the past. All you practiced and followed was based on a sound understanding of a school of fiqh. [Shurunbulali, Al-‘Iqd al-Farid Li Bayan al-Rajih Min al-Khilaf Fi Jawaz al-Taqlid]
