What Is the Ruling on Buying Electronics Online or without Direct Exchange with It Containing Gold Plating?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I know that in Islam, it is haram to buy gold without immediate exchange and hand to hand, but what about electronic items such as phones or computers? I have asked experts, and they say that the PCB (printed circuit board) and the processor on electronic devices does contain genuine gold plating for the conductor of electricity and protection from corrosion. Is it haram to buy electronics without immediate exchange and hand-to-hand?

The expert also mentions that the gold plating is very thin.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health.

In the case of electronic components, smartphones, and circuit boards that contain gold plating, immediate exchange and hand-to-hand are not necessary. Therefore, it will be permissible to buy electronics without immediate exchange and hand-to-hand.
