Is Medication Containing Magnesium Stearate and Stearic Acid Permissible?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

If the medication contains magnesium stearate and stearic acid, which is potentially more often than not derived from animals, would it be haram to consume?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Leading contemporary Hanafi scholars have said any product that contains stearic acid and its derivatives, such as sodium stearate, magnesium stearate, etc., will be permissible to use due to going through chemical transformation (istihalat al-‘ayn) and widespread affliction (‘umum al-balwa).
