Is It Permissible to Read Stephen Hawking’s Books?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is it permissible to read books by Stephen Hawking that do not contain anything contrary to Shari’a? (Stephen Hawking also wrote things that went against the belief in God, but here I am asking about books that are written by him but do not contain such ideas)

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray you are well and in good faith and health.

It would be permissible to read Stephen Hawking’s books if they do not contain anything contrary to shari’a.

Reading is essential to human intellectual development, especially from a young age. However, one has to be guided and directed all the way. Even as adults, one must seek direction and guidance from scholars and learned religious people.

As an adult, if one reads books from one’s academic studies that contain anything contrary to shari’a, one has to seek supervision and guidance to not muddy one’s mind.

One way of avoiding falling for wrongful understanding is to seek knowledge in sound faith, practice, and spiritual excellence and to practice one’s religion by attending the local masjid for prayer and attending circles of knowledge and remembrance. This is the only way to safety.
