Is It Inadvisable to Use Flag That Represents Islam on Disposable Packaging?
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
The Sri Lankan flag contains an element representing Islam. Is it inadvisable to use the flag on product packaging that may be discarded inappropriately?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
After some research, the following entry was found. “The yellow border of the Lion Flag was extended around two vertical stripes placed near the hoist, green for the Muslims and orange for the Tamils (Hindus).” [Encyclopedia Brittanica]
The green stripe is nominally used to represent the Muslim population of Sri Lanka and does not directly correlate to Islam itself. Therefore, there is no legal requirement to revere this flag as its connection to Islam is peripheral.
Hope this helps
