Can I Record False Attendance for an Internship?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I am enrolled in a B.Ed. Course and preparing for government job exams simultaneously due to high unemployment in my country. The course includes a one-month teaching internship at a local school, which is treated as a formality, but daily attendance is required for official records. A relative in charge of a local school has offered to record false attendance so I can focus on my exam preparation. Would accepting this offer be permissible (halal)?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question. Allah reward you for seeking Islamic guidance.

It is impermissible to record false attendance even though your intentions are good.

Believers Have Many Temperaments, Except for Dishonesty

Abdur Rahman Ibn Yazid (Allah be pleased with him) reported that Abdullah Ibn Mas‘ud (Allah be pleased with him) said, “The believer may have all kinds of natural dispositions flowing throughout himself, except for treachery and dishonesty.”  [Ibn Abi Shayba, al-Iman]

Allah (Most High) will reward you with the best for your noble and sincere intentions. He is aware of and knows our situations. May He guide us to that which pleases Him, forgive us for our shortcomings, and alleviate our difficulties, Amin.
