What is the Status of Nawfal Ibn Abi al-Furat as a Narrator of Hadith?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

It is known that scholars such as Ibn Hibban, Ibn Hajr Asqalani, and Dhahabi considered Nawfal Ibn Abi al-Furat to be trustworthy in hadith narration; however, contemporary scholars of Jarh wa Ta‘dil considered Nawfal Ibn Abi al-Furat unknown.

My question is, what contemporary scholars of Jarh wa Ta‘dil considered Nawfal Ibn Abi al-Furat unknown in the status of hadith narration?

Your assistance in the matter will be highly appreciated, Jazak Allahu Khairan.

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It is better to go with the classical scholars’ grading of Nawfal Ibn Abi al-Furat to be considered trustworthy and his hadith narration graded as accepted than otherwise. The following website has classified his status to be unknown (majhul al-hal) and trustworthy. It would be better to send them a question.

Classifying a narrator as unreliable or weak is called: ‘Jarh’ (Criticism) while classifying him as reliable is known as ‘Ta‘dil’ (Praise). This aspect of the science of Hadith is called ‘Ilm al-Jarh wa Ta‘dil.’ This science is very intricate and is the right of a specialist only.
