Is Purification Needed if a Cat That Consumed Impurity Licks You?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I adopted a cat that previously ate a dog’s vomit. If the cat licks me in the future, would I need to purify myself seven times? Should I consider giving the cat away to maintain purity?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

You won’t need to purify yourself in the future. Also, you don’t have to give the cat away to maintain purity. The issue of licking would have arisen only if the cat licked you after eating the dog’s vomit.

If a cat eats a mouse and drinks water immediately afterwards, the water becomes impure. However, if the cat licks its mouth for a short while, the mouth is purified and no longer impure. [Tahtawi, Tahtawi Ala Maraqi al-Falah]
