Is It Normal to Feel a Tingle During Ablution?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

I am a female and experience a brief pulse or tingle in my private area during wudu, which feels different from arousal. It causes doubts and inconvenience as I often renew wudu. Is this feeling normal or a sign of arousal?

Answer

Thank you for your question. I suspect that you are feeling some kind of vaginal gas, though whatever it is, you should completely ignore it.

Doubts

The only time you should listen to your doubts during ablution is outlined in the Reliance of the Traveller:

e5.27 If one has doubts during the course of the ablution that one has washed a particular limb or the head, then it is obligatory to wash it again and everything that follows it in the ablution sequence. But if these doubts arise after one has finished ablution, one need not repeat anything. (A: The same is true of the purificatory bath (ghusl).)

Renewing ablution

Do what is necessary to ignore baseless misgivings during wudu as doubts in purity are the highlights of Shaytan’s whisperings. A pulse or tingle will not affect the validity of your ablution. There is no need to renew your ablution unless you are following the sunna of tajdid al-wudu (renewing the wudu when already in a state of wudu)

It says in the Reliance of the Traveller:

e5.28 It is recommended to renew the ablution (N: when there has been no intervening state of minor ritual impurity) when one has performed any prayer, obligatory or nonobligatory, with it.

Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) used to do wudu for every prayer. Tirmidhi (58) added: whether he was in a state of purity or not. [Bukhari]
