Is It Haram for Me to Buy Crop Tops as I Don’t Wear Hijab Yet?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

I do not wear a hijab yet but I want to buy crop tops and shirts (which expose the arms) and I’m going to wear them in public since I’m not a hijabi yet and my parents don’t allow me to wear the hijab.

My question now is: Is it haram to buy those and make dua to get those clothes, because I’m going to use them for haram purposes BUT later when I will wear abayas and stuff I still need to wear clothes sunder them and that’s where I can wear these shirts or crop tops so my purchase can be used for halal and haram purposes. Is it haram for me to buy them and make dua for me to get them?

Answer

Thank you for your question. It is not sinful to buy the crop tops, it is sinful to wear them, intending to expose what is beyond the face, and hands. Be mindful of your decisions and hasten to be the person that you want to be because only then you will find peace. This life is short and finding your Islam will give you satisfaction and relief like no other, in sha Allah.

Islam is a religion of modesty and the upshot is to choose modesty when the world we live in has chosen the opposite. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Every religion has its distinct characteristic, and the distinct characteristic of Islam is modesty.” [Ibn Maja]
