I am a convert who joined a local group to study Islam together, but I found the group to discuss topics that I felt were not wise in their approach and likely to push people away from their religion. 

How should I deal with this?

It is imperative that people who answer questions or teach are qualified and trained in answering questions. Often, people who have not studied deeply are very narrow-minded in their views and lack wisdom in issuing a fatwa or an edict. 

Leaving a group is not a bad thing necessarily. One is commanded to protect their religion and ensure they take their knowledge from reliable sources. 

I recommend gradually increasing your religious knowledge and keep researching matters until it is clear to you what the truth is in a matter. That can easily be done through a consistent pattern of allocating time weekly to study and research.
