Can I Recite Surah Al-Waqi’ah and Mulk During the Day to Have the Reward From Reciting Them By Night?

Answered by Ustadh Tabraze Azam
Question: Assalamu alaykum,

The ahadith that mention the virtues and benefits of reciting Surah Mulk and Waqiah daily mention its recitation at night.

If I recite either surah in the day time, do I qualify for its reward or must it be recited at night?
Answer: Wa alaikum assalam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh,
I pray that you are in the best of health and faith, insha’Allah.
You can recite it during the day until you familiarise yourself with the surah, but thereafter strive to recite it at some point after Maghrib.
It is reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Whoever recites Surah al-Waqi`ah every night shall never suffer poverty.” [Bayhaqi, Shu`ab al-Iman]

How to understand this Hadith?

Ibn `Allan al-Bakri, the famous Shafi`i exegete and commentator of the Adhkar of Imam Nawawi– who included this tradition in his work, as did Imam Mundhiri in his al-Targhib wa al-Tarhib– quotes from Fath al-Ilah saying: “It seems as though what is intended is that the one who recites it will attain unto a self-sufficiency which arises from having reliance (tawakkul) upon Allah. This reliance comes about by virtue of his recitation, reflection, and subsequent realization that Allah alone is the one who is the Effector of causes and the Originator of causative factors; and also through his attesting to the verses [such as] ‘Do you create it yourselves or are We the Creator?’ [59], ‘Is it you who make them grow or We?’ [64], ‘Was it you who brought it down from the rain-cloud or We?’… as reliance is taking the means whilst witnessing the true Actor. Thus, whoever attains unto self-sufficiency has complete freedom of need of people. And in reality, true poverty is only to Allah, so he will never be in need of them.” [Ibn `Allan, al-Futuhat al-Rabbaniyyah `ala al-Adhkar al-Nawawiyyah]
And Allah alone gives success.
