Is the Hadith About Rewards for Initiating and Responding to Salam Authentic?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is the hadith about the one who initiates salam receiving a gold brick in Janna and the responder receiving a silver brick authentic?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I have tried to locate the hadith but have not found it. However, there are other hadiths that emphasize the tremendous virtues of initiating salam, such as it is a means of drawing closer to Allah. What could be better than this? May Allah Most High make us among those who practice this.
Close Proximity To Allah Most High
Abu Umama narrated that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Those who are nearest to Allah are those who are first to give a salam.” [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, and graded as Hasan]
Best People Who Initiate Salam
Abu Umama reported that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Verily, the best people to Allah are those who are first to greet with peace.” [Abu Dawud]
Shaking Hands – A Means for Forgiveness
Bara’ ibn Al ‘Azib (Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “No two Muslims meet each other and shake hands, except that Allah forgives (their minor sins) them before they part.” [Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi]
