Are the Following Ingredients in Perfume Permissible?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I emailed a perfume company, who confirmed they do not use animal-derived ingredients in their perfume apart from the following: Carmine, Beeswax, Honey, royal jelly, lanolin, and fish extracts and derivates.

I have researched some of the ingredients, but I am stuck on royal jelly and fish extracts and derivates-are these pure ingredients?

They do have alcohol listed on the ingredients, but it doesn’t state what type of alcohol.

Would it be permissible for me to use this perfume? They have other ingredients listed on the package, but I assume they are chemicals. I assume it is pure until I can confirm otherwise. Is this reasonable?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

Royal Jelly, fish, and derivates are not animal-derived ingredients and, if found in any perfume, will not make it permissible to wear.

Alcohol that is used widely in all perfumes is synthetic alcohol, thus, it would be permissible to use Dior Sauvage Eau De Toilette, like any other perfume. See the links below.

It is permitted to use deodorants, perfumes, and creams containing alcohol, as it is invariably synthetic alcohol and not the wine (khamr) that is impermissible and filthy.[Usmani, Fiqh al-Buyu’]
