What To Do Upon Urinating in Bed?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question:

I urinated accidentally in my bed. When I woke up, I saw my trousers wet with urine. Now I don’t know what I should purify. I will purify the upper bed sheet and the lower sheet. The lower sheet has holes where urine got most probably. Can I just clean the sheet and flip the mattress.

Answer:

In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate

Walaikum assalam,

I hope you’re doing well, insha’Allah.

It is a great gift from Allah that He has made this religion easy. The Messenger of Allah (peace & blessings be upon him) tells us, “Truly, this religion is ease.” [Bukhari]

It is only necessary to wash the urine away from where you can see its traces—on your body, trousers, and sheets. You don’t need to wash all of these. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

Practical Caution: Wash Away the Urine First
It is recommended to rinse the areas clearly stained by the urine first under the tap—to wash away the urine. Just let the water flow over the affected area and just strain it at the end. [ibid.] It isn’t necessary to “check” or investigate after this.

Then, just place them in the washing machine. [Shaykh Hassan al-Hindi; Mufti Mahmud Ashraf Usmani]

Basic Requirement: Just Wash!
In itself, it is sufficient to place them in the washing machine if you’re pressed for time, or want to make things easy, or if you’re given to having doubts and misgivings. [As understood from Ibn Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

As for the bed: flipping it is sufficient.
