Question

Does the prohibition in hadith Muslim 1043 against asking people for anything extend to seeking knowledge from teachers or lecturers about non-religious matters? Could you provide insight into understanding this hadith and its context?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

This hadith has been mentioned in the Book of Zakat in the chapter titled: It is Disliked to Ask from People.

Malik al-Ashja’i (Allah be pleased with him) reported, ‘We, nine, eight or seven men, were in the company of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace), and he said:

Why don’t you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? -while we had recently pledged allegiance. So we said: Messenger of Allah, we have already pledged allegiance to you. He again said: Why don’t you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? And we said: Messenger of Allah, we have already pledged allegiance to you. He again said: Why don’t you pledge allegiance to the Messenger of Allah? We stretched our hands and said: Messenger of Allah. We have already pledged allegiance to you.

Now tell (on what things) we should pledge allegiance to you. He said I (You must pledge allegiance) that you would worship Allah only and would not associate with Him anything, (and observe) five prayers, and obey- (and he said one thing in an undertone) -that you would not ask of anything. (And as a consequence of that) I saw that some of these people did not ask anyone to pick up the whip for them if it fell down.

[Muslim]The meaning and context are that one should not ask others about worldly matters and needs. During the initial period of Islam, the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) was giving pledges to his companions. It does not include asking about knowledge and religious matters. Allah Most High says, …then ask those who have knowledge of the Scriptures˺. [Quran, 16:43]
