What Is the Authenticity and Meaning of the Hadith About Prioritizing Income over Raising Children?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Assalamu Alaykum, I heard a hadith mentioning that people will seek two incomes out of love for the world and neglect raising children. Could you clarify this hadith and provide its authenticity?
Answer
I have searched and not found a hadith about people seeking two incomes. However, there is a hadith regarding the love of excessive wealth.
‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbas, Anas ibn Malik, ‘Abdullah ibn Zubayr, and Abu Musa Ash‘ari (Allah be pleased with them) reported that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “If the son of Adam were to own a valley of gold, he would desire to have two valleys. Nothing can fill his mouth except dust, and Allah accepts the repentance of whoever repents.” [Bukhari, Muslim]
Nature of Humans
The nature of humans is such that they will continue to be greedy for worldly possessions until they die, and their mouths and bellies are filled with the dirt of their graves. [Munawi, Faydh al-Qadir]
